The University of Florida Health Science Center (HSC), the most comprehensive academic health center in the Southeast, is dedicated to high-quality programs of education, research, patient care and public service. The center is nationally acclaimed for programs related to the brain and spine, diabetes, drug design, genetics, pediatric dentistry and organ transplantation. Multidisciplinary programs now are being developed or expanded in the areas of aging, cancer, cellular and molecular biology, children's health and women's health.
In Gainesville, the HSC encompasses the Colleges of Dentistry, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine, the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and the flagship referral hospital, Shands at UF.
Closely affiliated with the HSC is Shands HealthCare, a regional clinical delivery network encompassing six acute care hospitals and two specialty hospitals, plus 40 satellite clinics staffed by UF College of Medicine physicians on campus and throughout North Central Florida. The HSC's Jacksonville campus includes graduate teaching programs in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and health professions, as well as a growing number of collaborative research and patient-care programs. Additional academic and clinical affiliations of the HSC and Shands HealthCare extend throughout Florida.
The UF Health Science Center has a close working affiliation
with the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System, which
includes Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in Gainesville and Lake
City, and a network of ambulatory care clinics.
