A University Icon

Century Tower was built in 1953 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the university and was dedicated to UF students killed in World Wars I and II. The interior was originally planned as a historic museum and art gallery, but it was never completed. In 1979, a cast-bells carillon was installed in the Century Tower. The campus enjoys the sounds of this unusual musical instrument, played daily in informal programs during class breaks and in longer recitals for special University events. Viewers of the movie Parenthood with Steve Martin, might recognize Century Tower. Though filmed in Orlando, some scenes were shot here to simulate the look of a northern campus.

Historic Performances

The University Auditorium, completed in the mid-1920s and renovated and expanded as a bicentennial project in 1976, is one of several university buildings included in the National Register of Historic Places. The Auditorium provides a concert stage, seating for 867, and is suitable for musical concerts, special lectures, convocations, and less-technically demanding dance programs and pageants. Among other amenities is the Friends of Music Room, a tastefully designed and decorated room used for receptions. The Auditorium is also home to the Anderson Memorial Organ. Donated in 1925, the organ has since been expanded and improved with the installation of additional pipes and a state-of-the-art five-manual console, making it one of the major instruments of its kind in the Southeast.
